About Us

Calton playgroup is a community based playgroup managed by a committee of parents, carers, and staff and has been operating since 1984.  We hold a charitable status and are a non-profit making organisation, reinvesting all the funds and fees back into the service we deliver.

All our staff have excellent experience and qualifications and  are dedicated to their roles, the staff regularly update their skills to maintain continuing professional development.  We are committed to providing children with quality care and education in a safe and stimulating environment, and encourage them to become independent learners by developing their self-confidence, initiative and personal responsibility.

Our premises which are situated on the grounds of Calton primary school, are bright, spacious and well equipped.  They consist of three play rooms, one which is dedicated to physical play, we also have a fenced off area out the front of the premises for outside play.

We enjoy close links with school and have use to their playground, fields and forest area.

The early years foundation stage

The early years foundation stage (EYFS) is the statutory framework which sets the standards which the early years providers must meet.

It ensures that all children learn and develop well, and are kept healthy and safe.

We ensure that all seven areas of learning and development are covered through observation, planning and assessment.

They are as follows:-

  • Prime areas. Personal, social and emotional development, communication and language, physical development.
  • Specific areas. Literacy, mathematics, understanding the world, expressive arts and design.

The last Ofsted inspection was held in July 2018 and we received an extremely positive report, with areas of outstanding practice and all other areas good.

An up to date copy of the playgroup Ofsted report can be viewed on this website or feel free to ask a member of staff to view a paper copy.

My wife has forwarded to me the emails you have sent around about the activities your team carries out every week with the kids.

Just to say, I think this is a great idea and it will help us to know where we should focus on our child's education. That will help us to understand what she is trying to tell us when we ask her about what she has done at school and it will give us the opportunity to know what to practise with her at home in order to help her learn quicker.

So thank you very much I really appreciate this

Calton Playgroup is fantastic. Our son always had so much fun and remains close to the staff who are always friendly. We will never forget all the support they gave hime through his playgroup years. Thank you!

Really pleased with my child's progress so far. It's lovely to see her coming out of her shell and making some good friends.

X is really happy at Playgroup and we are very pleased with his progress

She loved the theme this week and she told us all about it.  She's excited about next week as we've been looking for insects in our garden with magnifying glasses and an insect book, today she found a beetle!

My son has really enjoyed his time here and settled in well.  I can not thank the staff enough for welcoming him into the group.

My wife and I love receiving the emails detailing the activities your team carries out  during the week.  It helps us understand what she is trying to tell us about her day at playgroup and also gives us the opportunity to practise with her at home.
